Last weekend I was lucky enough to be invited by The Co-operative to a special screening of Black Gold, a film about coffee. The film takes a look at the coffee industry through the eyes of Tadesse Meskela, who is struggling to save his co-operative of 74,000 Ethiopian coffee farmers from bankruptcy. It was an amazing film, really thought provoking, I even had chance to chat to one of the the film makers after the screening.
Coffee is the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil, but coffee farmers are paid so little that many of them have been forced to abandon their crops. How can this be, when I am paying up to £4 for a cup of coffee in a restaurant or on the high street?
