British Sandwich Week (May 9-15th) presents a great opportunity to celebrate one of Britain’s institutions – the sandwich. Since being uncovered and named by the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762, the Great British Sandwich has become something of an institution and, in recent years, Britain’s single most important food.
Each year we eat in excess of 11.5 billion sandwiches, some 3 billion made by a commercial industry that now employs over 330,000 people.
