Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. The campaign calls on all those responsible for diabetes care to understand diabetes and take control. For people with diabetes, this is a message about empowerment through education.For governments, it is a call to implement effective strategies and policies for the prevention and management of diabetes to safeguard the health of their citizens with and at risk of diabetes. For healthcare professionals, it is a call to improve knowledge so that evidence-based recommendations are put into practice. For the general public, it is a call to understand the serious impact of diabetes and know, where possible, how to avoid or delay diabetes and its complications. The key messages of the campaign are:
•    Know the diabetes risks and know the warning signs
•    Know how to respond to diabetes and who to turn to
•    Know how to manage diabetes and take control

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.
At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare.
Remembrance Day is on 11 November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War.
It is one of the best known and supported campaigns in the calendar and each year the nation shows its support for the Legion’s work by giving generously to the Poppy Appeal.

The 2011 Poppy Appeal will launch in late October and we hope to raise more than our 2010 total of £36 million! Please give generously.

Physical activity is good for your body and boosting your mood, which is why the new theme is ‘MOVE TO IMPROVE‘.  Being physically active is especially important for people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs) – even doing a small amount of extra activity around the home can help.

The UK children’s charity that aims to change the world for children with genetic disorders.
Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK – that’s more than 30,000 babies each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest killer of children aged 14 years and under.
Jeans for Genes Day is the annual fundraising event and takes place on Friday 7th October 2011. Ask your colleagues at work or the children at school to wear their jeans for the Day and make a donation.

You can be safe in the knowledge that hydrogenated fats and controversial additives like aspartame, tartrazine and MSG are banned under organic standards.

Better for the environment
Organic farming reduces environmental pollution and greenhouse gases released from food production by restricting the use of artificial chemical fertilisers and pesticides.

Higher animal welfare
Organic standards insist that animals are given plenty of space and fresh air to thrive and grow – guaranteeing a truly free-range life.
Wildlife protection. Organic farms are havens for wildlife and provide homes for bees, birds and butterflies. In fact, plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% greater on organic farms.

A GM free diet
GM crops and ingredients are banned under organic standards. Choosing organic is an effective way to avoid GM in your diet.

The birthday of famous deafblind person, Helen Keller, falls on 27 June and marks the start of this year’s Deafblind Awareness Week.
The week itself aims to raise awareness about deafblindness and increase the support for deafblind people and their families. There will be events and activities held nationwide which everybody get involved with, including a huge Drumathon event with up to 10,000 children from primary schools playing the drums.

The Fostering Network’s Foster Care Fortnight is the UK’s biggest annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and attract new foster carers. In 2011 it will run from 16 to 29 May.
Under the strapline fostering: time to care, this year’s campaign will highlight the urgent need for more foster carers and call on everyone to get behind fostering and support children in care.
